STORY

ZeroUI was founded in 2012 by two long time college friends, Raja Jasti, an experienced technology entrepreneur, and Dr. Karthik Ramani, professor in the school of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University. Both shared a strong passion for 3D modeling and computational geometry technologies during their undergrads at IIT Madras and then through their PhDs at Stanford.

The inspiration for ZeroUI came at Makerfaire 2012 when Raja’s daughter got excited by a cool toy idea she had after seeing a 3D printer. As she was trying to communicate the idea to them using hand gestures, Raja and Karthik realized the need for an intelligent software system that could understand her movements and create a 3D digital model of the idea. This revelation came at the same time that Karthik’s C-Design Labs was already working on the core gesture and shape modeling technologies that could make this vision a reality, and thus ZeroUI was born.

VISION

ZeroUI has simple but powerful mission: Make everyone a maker.

We call this Personal Making™.

It is the convergence of consumerization of manufacturing enabled by affordable 3D printers and democratization of creativity enabled by ZeroUI’s gesture based 3D modeling technology.

WHAT WE DO

ZeroUI is developing the world’s first hands-free 3D modeling technology.
It enables anyone to create and interact with 3D models in 3D space using their hands in a natural way similar to potters and sculptors.
Now 3D modeling is as easy as finger painting and playing with playdough.

RAJA JASTI - CEO AND FOUNDER

Raja Jasti, CEO, brings 16 years of experience building technology startups spanning consumer internet, mobile, enterprise software and SaaS. He brings to ZeroUI valuable domain expertise in web-based 3D graphics, 3D modeling and gaming. Dr. Jasti has long been passionate about bringing 3D modeling technologies to masses. In 1996, he co-founded Modellogic, a developer of language based 3D modeling technology called Geometrica. He then was the founder and CEO of a venture funded startup called Webscope, which was an early pioneer in web-based real-time 3D design collaboration solutions. He successfully raised $8M from leading VC organizations and lead the company of 50 employees. Webscope established a global presence spanning US, Europe and Asia regions with an impressive customer base including Johnson & Johnson, NTT and Foxconn. He later was the co-founder and CEO of SpotSquare a mobile gaming company that developed cross-platform 3D games for mobile and tablet computing platforms. Raja has a B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology Madras and a PhD from Stanford University.

KARTHIK RAMANI - CSO AND FOUNDER

Karthik Ramani, Chief Scientist, earned his B.Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, and a Ph.D. from Stanford University, in Mechanical Engineering. The NSF recognized him through several awards including a Career Award. He was recognized by Purdue University through a University Faculty Scholars Award, Discovery in Mechanical Engineering Award, and the Innovation of the year award from the State of Indiana. His teams research help found and launch the world’s first on-line commercial shape-based search engine for the global supply chain (VizSeekTM) which won the Tibbet’s Award from NSF. He serves on the editorial board of the Elsevier Journal of Computer-Aided Design and the ASME Journal of Mechanical Design. Purdue University has recognized him through the College of Engineering Research Excellence Award and also a University wide Commercialization Award, and he is the only professor that has won both. His prior research innovations have been patented and licensed and he has participated actively in commercialization of his group’s research in the past. In addition, he has won two grants from NSF education and cyberlearning programs, works with learning scientists as PI and actively publishes in engineering education journals in the design area.

HANDY POTTER

Karthik’s C-Design labs team at Purdue was the first to develop and demonstrate gesture based shape modeling paradigm which won the best paper award in ASME IDETC for Handy-Potter. It represents some of the preliminary work behind GENIUS framework.

GENIUS SDK

At the core of ZeroUI’s technology is GENIUS, natural user interface (NUI) driven 3D shape creation framework. It is the convergence of state-of-the art scientific advancements in machine learning, computer vision, computational geometry and human computer interaction. It is based on National Science funded research innovation from Dr. Karthik Ramani’s C-Design Labs at Purdue University.
